FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Where did Lagottos come from? You may have heard of the Lagotto referred to as the Italian Truffle dog, originally Water gun dogs, they were "repurposed" as truffle dogs to avoid becoming extinct but they still very much carry their water dog characteristics through to modern breeding. The breed actually has originates as far back as the 1300s, making them one of the earliest dog breeds known to man. You can find their breed standard here with a lot more information about the breed.
-
What health testing is completed? We DNA test our dogs for all the Lagotto related diseases, we also hip and elbow xray once the dog has reached maturity.
-
Do lagottos need grooming? Most definitely yes, we will start the process with the pup from a young age and help educate you on coat maintenance before pup arrives. It is important that you find a groomer that understands a Lagotto and their breed specific trim. We do our best to start to desensitise the puppies to the grooming process but once home owners must continue in order to create a dog that trusts the grooming process and is at ease at the groomers rather than making it a fearful experience for the dog.
-
Is the Lagotto the right breed for me?You are welcome to give us a call and discuss the pros and cons of this breed and whether they are right for you. We have 5 children who are raised with and raise the pups and dogs. For our lifestyle they make the perfect dog, they are the right amount of energy and calm. They are playful yet will curl up on the kids beds at the end of the night. They will run beside my bike and have a swim, I use them in my puppy preschool classes as demonstration dogs. But they are extremely smart and are a working dog so if you don't give them a job to do or an outlet they will find one for themselves. If you live in an apartment and work long hours, this likely wouldn't be the right dog choice for you.
-
How often do you breed? We don't breed often, we are likely to have one or two max litters a year. We aim to first title our dogs, get all their health testing completed to ensure we are breeding to better the breed. Feel free to use the contact form to send your details and receive an email once we have puppy news or alternatively follow our facebook which will be the most reliable for puppy news.
-
